The heart of the Teacher
The boy and the Starfish
As an old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a boy ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the boy, he asked why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun.
“But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” said the old man. “How can your effort make any difference?”
The boy looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it safely in the waves. “It makes a difference to this one.” he said.
As I was doing my assignment for a module, I was reminded of this story that I read on a publicity postcard years back. It was printed by MOE.haha.I'm coming to an end of my training in NIE, and would soon be posted to teach in a primary school. It has only been less than a year, and I would sometimes stop and wonder again what is my ultimate goal of teaching the kids. Sometimes, I find myself inclining towards making sure the kids excel academically, which isn't wrong in itself - after all, that's what teachers are meant to do right?
But time and time again, I get reminders such as this, that there is more to it than just grades, or even education. It is the dealing with lives, with beings, that I want to impact. And how arduous the task is! Yet, like the boy and the starfish, there is no giving up, as long as it makes a difference to one.
Lord, renew my vision.

Seed
I was just looking at the 4 chili seeds given to me yesterday at Combined Service. All the youths and YA were tasked to grow our seeds by putting them in soil and watering them frequently.I looked at the little yellow seeds of diameter 2mm, and imagined the process of it growing into a seedling, a plant, and finally bearing fruits. And honestly, it was a bit hard to comprehend - how such a small seed like this could sprout a stem, leaves, and chili?!
Growth is indeed a miracle - a divine act. Paul was right in saying "So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow." 1 Cor 3:7.
It is comforting to me that while it seems humanly impossible to make a seed grow into a tree, God is the one who will cause the growth.
However, while I can get excited about the seeds growing into plants, they will always remain dormant seeds until I give them soil, water, and sunlight. And they shall remain as seeds, until I find good soil to put them in.
When I look at the seeds now, they no longer are mere useless seeds that I throw away. They have become little seeds bursting with potential to become huge plants that would bear fruit.

Quotes that made me go 'wow'
I know I have been leaving quotes recently, only because these are the words that moved my heart, that left me in deep thought. A summary of my daily life I won't want to bore you with, so a few quotes to leave you hopefully thinking.Winston Churchill's reply to a Lady-
Reply: "If I were married to you, I'd drink it."
Benny Ho's illustration of God's hand upon us while praying for a woman-
"I saw a vision of a white piece of paper, and there are a few black spots on it. Those black spots represent the tragedies, negative things in peoples' lives. But then I saw the hand of the Lord coming, and He drew petals around the black spots, until they became centres of beautiful flowers. And then the verse Rom 8:28 came - And God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose. Sometimes the very things that we thought are the tragedies in our life, but God turns it into centres of beautiful flowers."
